Monarch larva munching on milkweed The Gentle Art of Raising Butterflies & Moths

1 May 2000
No seminars are currently scheduled for 2000.

Whether you are a butterfly hobbiest or educator just wanting to raise these beautiful creatures for your personal enjoyment or a classroom study unit, or if you are considering becoming a commercial butterfly breeder, this course is for you! Come learn about this highly enjoyable, personally satisfying, and increasingly important conservation-based hobby or business: raising and selling butterflies for education, special celebrations, personal pleasure, and environmental enhancement.

Butterfly releases are a hot new trend for weddings, memorial services, grand openings, birthdays, and other celebratory events. This trend has been showcased in recent months in the Wall Street Journal, People Magazine, Entrepreneur Magazine, Modern Bride, the Discovery Channel, the Good Morning America show, on public television, and in newspapers and professional journals around the country.

National Science Foundation guidelines mandate training in complete and incomplete metamorphosis for all grade school children. Schools around the country are planting butterfly gardens, erecting vivariums, and raising a variety of native butterflies and moths to teach children of the wonder and beauty which surrounds them.

A retired Navy lieutenant commander, Sheri Moreau has returned to her original love of natural history, and is thoroughly enjoying her second career as a butterfly farmer. Educated as a wildlife biologist, she has over 30 years experience as a hobbiest raising Lepidoptera—butterflies and moths—and was trained in commercial butterfly farming methods by renowned naturalist Rick Mikula of Hole-in-Hand Butterfly Farm. Mikula supports and recommends Moreau as an experienced, knowledgeable, and engaging instructor.

Moreau's seminars are taught at Release of Wings Butterfly Farm in Carmel, California, and include a visit to Mariposa de Carmel, a private, one acre butterfly garden with a 625 square foot butterfly enclosure in Carmel Valley. Continental breakfast/snacks/drinks are provided. Lunch is not provided, however we will order sandwiches and pick them up enroute to Carmel Valley.

Students receive a detailed, 200+ page manual which fully covers all aspects of rearing butterflies and moths. The seminar features hands-on training with live Lepidoptera in all stages of their life cycle, innumerable displays, a slide-show presentation, microscope training, and much more. Seminars are limited to six attendees, cost $175 per person or $325 per couple (one manual), and are held from 9am to 5pm. Private and off-site seminars can be arranged. Manual only: $75 plus $5 shipping and handling (California residents please add 7.25% sales tax).
